POCUS Education
POCUS Education was established to provide flexible professional Ultrasound Education for Point of Care (POCUS) clinicians wishing to learn or improve their Ultrasound skills. POCUS Education is run by Jo McCann, a senior accredited medical sonographer and Lecturer at the University of Otago. She is keen to share her knowledge and ultrasound skills with all users of ultrasound so they may integrate POCUS into their clinical practice.
Your Ultrasound Educator
Jo McCann is an accredited medical sonographer, working in a variety of clinical and educational roles. She is currently the Course Co-ordinator and Clinical Lecturer for the Clinician Performed Ultrasound (CPU) course at the University of Otago, teaching the Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) general ultrasound paper. As an appointed Honorary Teaching Fellow at the University of Auckland, Jo is a supervisor of post-graduate students in the Medical Imaging Department.
Jo has presented at several national and international conferences, and was an invited panellist for the World Health Organisation (WHO). She is a guest lecturer in Australia and Malaysia on various ultrasound topics, as well as being an examiner for The Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (ASUM) Diploma of Medical Ultrasonography (DMU) and Post Graduate DMU Asia programmes. Jo has served as an elected Director on the ASUM Board of Directors since 2017 and the immediate past Chair of NZ ASUM and the DMU Board of Examiners. She is currently a Board member for the Post Graduate DMU(Asia) Ultrasound programme.

Based in Hamilton, Jo travels throughout New Zealand working as a senior accredited medical sonographer in the public health system where her role also includes teaching sonography students and POCUS skills to clinicians.
Jo volunteers her time and expertise to improve the ultrasound skills in low resource nations. Traveling to Ethiopia with the World Federation of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB), she worked with clinicians at Ayder Referral Hospital in Mekāele, Ethiopia. In 2020, to assist with the ASUM Outreach Indonesian programme at Bumi Sehat, Jo taught ultrasound skills to doctors and midwives.
Further demonstrating her passion and commitment to expand ultrasound skills and knowledge globally, Jo has accepted an appointment as programme manager for RAD-AID in the South Pacific.
